On-Road Bicycle Lane Types, Roadway Characteristics, and Risks for Bicycle Crashes

When it comes to road safety, bicyclists are often overlooked. The use of bicycle lanes contributes to the safety of both bicyclists and motor vehicles, and reduces overall traffic injuries. In this study, past PISC trainee Christopher Morrison, Jason Thompson, PISC Senior Scholar Michelle Kondo, and Ben Beck examined which bicycle lane types were associated with fewer crashes, and found that exclusive bicycle lanes were particularly effective, crashes were reduced in areas of higher speeds, tram stops, and bus routes, and that curbside bicycle lanes were the least effective.
