Applying The Haddon Matrix Conceptual Model to Guide Motor Vehicle Crash Injury Research and Prevent

PISC Executive Director, Douglas Wiebe, PhD, in collaboration with a host of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, University of Botswana, and more examine opportunities to prevent, through future research and countermeasures, Motor Vehicle Crashes (MCV) specifically in Botswana. The Haddon Matrix was used as a conceptual framework to identify risk factors for MVCs. The barriers or facilitators to MVCs were identified to be animals on the road, drunk or reckless driving, poor road quality, lack of road signs/traffic signals to orient drivers, and poor visibility. The exercise resulted in potential research questions for the trainees to pursue in mentored research of their own.
