Trauma-Informed Care for Violently Injured Patients in the Emergency Department

Although violent traumatic injury is one of the most common injuries seen to by emergency physicians, there is less consideration for a patient's past trauma experiences and how they might negatively impact treatment for more recent injuries. Because of this, Kyle R. Fischer, Katherine M. Bakes, Theodore J. Corbin, PISC Senior Scholar Joel A. Fein, Erica J. Harris, Thea L. James, and Marlene D. Melzer-Lange have released an article that describes an alternative approach to trauma care named trauma-informed care, which is based upon knowing the effect of trauma, recognizing the signs and symptoms of trauma, avoiding retraumatization, and developing appropriate policies and procedures.
