Reducing Gun Violence Using Alcohol-Related Convictions

 

In this article co-authored by PISC Senior Scholars Elinore Kaufman, MD, MSHP; Christopher Morrison, PhD; and Charles Branas, PhD, the scholars offer commentary on the idea of alcohol-related prohibitions on firearms purchase based on DUI convictions. Referencing a study by Kagawa et al. which looks at the association of prior convictions for driving under the influence with risk of subsequent arrest for violent crimes among handgun purchasers, it is suggested that alcohol-related prohibitions have great potential to avert firearm-related injury and death.
