Fielding notes that almost 60 percent of gun deaths in 2017 were suicides. He further highlights the issue of gun death suicide, with shocking statistics that lead to the suggestion of a "under-explored public health approach".
Fielding suggests an approach similar to possessing a license to operate a more vehicle, "Through smart-gun technology, firearms become “personalized,” useless to all but owners and authorized users. Magnet locks, sensor-activated firearms that identify the authorized user, and pin-enabled locks are all available."
