PISC Past Trainee Elinore Kaufman, MD, gives an informative interview with the WHYY's Radio Times after her recent op-ed in the New York Times, "Please, Stop Shooting. We need The Beds.". In the interview, Kaufman discusses concerns on gun violence, uncertainty with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and engagement with families or loved ones.
When asked how things are going for herself, staff and others who are on the front lines, Kaufman says, "I think it's certainly a stressful time and a scary time, but I think we've really come together as a community. The larger community has in many ways come together to support us. We are holding it together."
Importantly Kaufman notes, that there has been no decrease in gun violence and there are reasons to believe it may increase. For example, empty streets opposed to busy streets. Thinking about the underlying forces that lead to gun violence, which are "long-standing social inequities, structural violence, and systemic racism... none of those are going away".
