Survey US Hospital Type and Proximity to Mass Shooting Events

PISC Senior Scholars Michael Nance, MD, Sage Myers, MD, and colleagues authored a research letter evaluating the location of recent mass shooting events relative to nearest hospitals and TCs.

 

Myers et al. hypothesized that the nearest available hospitals to mass shooting events will commonly be non–trauma center (NTC) hospitals, where such patient loads are more likely to overwhelm capacity and advanced care options may be limited. They found that NTCs had a smaller mean (SD) distance from incidents than adult TCs or pediatric TCs. Myers et al. state that all hospital must expect and should prepare for the possibility of a mass-casualty event involving both adults and children
