A recent study led by PISC Senior Scholar Eugenia South, MD, MSPH, in collaboration with PISC Senior Scholar Michelle Kondo, PhD, and Nooshin Razani, MD, advised health care providers and systems to utilize the therapeutic properties of nature to improve public health. Previous in-depth studies have linked nature to health. Nature has been acknowledged as a Social Determinant of Health, yet nature is rarely employed as an SDH intervention. This study recommends that health care providers include individualized nature contact counseling in existing SDH interventions. In addition, health care systems should invest in the maintenance of existing green space, as well as “new, safe, and accessible green space” in the neighborhoods where their patients live.
