We developed a portable technology to dynamically map the daily activities of adolescents and their exposures. Philadelphia adolescents presenting to two city hospitals for gun and non-gun injuries were compared with a randomly selected, population sample of adolescent controls. A minute-by-minute record was created of how, when, with whom, and where each adolescent spent time as he or she traveled from location to location. Each participant was asked about their behaviors and activities, and about other people around them, and data were linked in to account for characteristics of streets, buildings, and neighborhoods. Select aspects of the urban environment were found to significantly impact adolescent health and safety.
