PISC Assistant Professor of Epidemiology Bernadette Hohl, PhD, was recently featured in Community Resilience by Alonzo L. Plough. Hohl seeks to reduce gun violence through a public health framework. Her research proves a direct correlation between gun violence and social determinants of health. By building upon pre-existing community programs, Hohl is able to significantly influence the communities she works with. Hohl’s collaboration with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is highlighted, as its community-led ‘clean and green’ effort to improve vacant lots led to a decrease in gun assaults. Hohl’s work is essential in untangling the “complex web of causation” that causes gun violence in communities.
