Changes in Crime Surrounding an Urban Home Renovation and Rebuild Program

The Nationwide Children’s Hospital launched the Healthy Homes Initiative from 2008-2019 to rejuvenate vacant properties in the South Side neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. A recent study led by Senior Scholar Michelle Kondo, PhD, featuring Senior Scholar Eugenia Catarina South, MD, MSPH, Past Trainee Christopher Morrison, PhD, External Advisory Board Member Charles Branas, PhD, and Senior Scholar Bernadette Hohl, PhD, evaluated the effectiveness of the Healthy Homes Initiative using a ZIP-code-level comparative case study to evaluate crime rate changes. Results indicated reduced theft in areas affected by the Healthy Homes Initiative. This study suggests that reconstruction of communities could reduce crime rates for neighbors of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
