Creating an Innovation Infrastructure in Academic Nursing

Nurse-led healthcare innovation is a topic of growing interest within the healthcare system. A recent study featuring PISC Dean’s Advisory Board Member Antonia Villarruel, PhD, RN, and PISC Executive Committee Member Therese S. Richmond, PhD, RN, FAAN, explores how to effectively implement health care innovation into academic nursing curriculums. The team recommends implementing support for innovation at all levels of nursing research, education, and practice. Effective performances should be focused on human-centered design with an innovation mindset. Hands-on experiences such as experiences and hackathons are encouraged. Furthermore, nursing education programs must think strategically about how to teach innovation into nursing curriculum for future generations. To optimize nurse-led healthcare innovation, it is essential that nurses are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and experiences they need to lead in this area.
