Approximately half of all COVID-19 deaths have been associated with residential care. A recent study contributed to by PISC International Scholar Michelle Degli Esposti, PhD, compared COVID-19 outbreaks, infections, and deaths among privatized profit and non-profit residential care centers. 28 studies across 5 countries were analyzed. Results indicated that residents in privatized profit care suffered significantly more infections and deaths than those in non-profit care, despite having a similar number of outbreaks. Moving forward, the profitable interests of residency owners should be taken into consideration in order to protect the vulnerable populations in care.
