In this study conducted by PISC Senior Scholar Abigail Bretzin, Aaron Zynda, PISC Executive Director Douglas Wiebe, and Tracey Covassin, the influence of health care provider and medical facility on return-to-play clearance following sport-related concussion was examined. The relationship between the two is particular important because it allows insight into why athletes seek care at certain medical facilities.
Through a prospective cohort design, the study concluded that authorized clearance to return-to-play was frequently provided by a Doctor of Medicine and at a pediatrician's office. It also found that median time to return to unrestricted participation following a sports-related concussion varied by health care provider and medical facility.
