Trends in US Alcohol Consumption During the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted countless aspects of daily life. A recent study featuring PISC Past Trainee Christopher Morrison, PhD, examined whether these disruptions have affected adult alcohol consumption in the United States. The team used longitudinal data from the Understanding America study to determine trends in adult drinking days from March to June 2020. Data was drawn from the Understanding America Study. The pandemic burden was calculated by comparing national COVID-19 rates to those of states. Results indicated that adult alcohol consumption has increased with the onset of the pandemic. Specifically, alcohol consumption in states with lower COVID-19 rates was consistently higher than in states with high COVID-19 rates. The global disruption caused by the pandemic has significantly impacted the drinking habits of those living in the United States.
