Understanding and Mitigating Health Inequities: Past, Current, and Future Directions

Data collection surrounding healthcare disparities has significantly improved over the past five decades. However, inequities in healthcare remain a widespread issue throughout the United States. A recent study led by PISC Internal Advisory Board Member Risa Lavisso-Mourey, MD, MBA, explains how to effectively combat healthcare disparities. Previous studies have exposed social factors such as housing and insurance coverage as contributors disproportionate healthcare treatment. Lavisso-Mourey and her team argue that previous research of healthcare disparities should be utilized to create programs that actively address structural inequities in the United States. The study concludes, “Only by addressing underlying structures will we get closer to a day when a person’s health prospects are no longer predicted by the social construct of race.”
