Post-Doctoral Fellowships

About the Program

The University of Pennsylvania Injury Science Center offers 12-24 month post-doctoral research fellowships with world class faculty from various research institutes, centers, and labs across campus. These fellowships are focused on scientific training and career development in pursuit of the highest caliber research to promote safety and improve the health of populations. Fellows receive senior mentorship and close peer collaboration in a rich scientific environment with faculty and multiple other fellows.

Fellows are expected to collaborate on research publications and grant submissions related to population sciences, epidemiology, public health, engineering, clinical medicine, nursing, and/or policy. Topics of study may include traffic safety, community injury prevention, adolescent health, violence prevention, firearm violence, overdose prevention, urban health, the reduction of risk taking behaviors, and others.

Fellows will assume responsibility of one or more specific, ongoing projects in conjunction with senior mentors. Fellows will also be expected to become proficient in the preparation of peer-reviewed research publications and scientific grant writing and will be strongly encouraged to conceive and lead their own grant submissions in preparation for entry into the job market.

Opportunities for post-doctoral research fellowships vary over time based on the current projects of the PISC faculty scholars. The Penn Injury Science Center does not have postdoctoral fellowship openings at this time. Sign up for our newsletter to receive announcements.

Milestones

Milestones will be used to determine each post-doctoral fellow’s progress and suitability to enter the second year of their fellowship and ultimately their completion of the fellowship and entry into the job market. Postdocs can follow one of two semi-flexible pathways with varied milestones:

Option 1

YEAR 1: 2-3 submitted peer-reviewed manuscripts + 1 fully prepared grant application (an R or K award, or similar)

YEAR 2: 3-5 submitted peer-reviewed manuscripts + 1 additional grant specific aims page

Option 2

YEAR 1: 3-5 submitted peer-reviewed manuscripts + 2 grant specific aims pages

YEAR 2: 2-3 submitted peer-reviewed manuscripts + 1 fully prepared grant application (an R or K award, or similar)

Post-doctoral fellows will be required to declare their entry into one of these two options when they begin their post-doctoral training in Year 1. Their chosen option and its milestones will then be a regular source of face-to-face discussion and monitoring for the fellow and their mentors.
